Associated Press urged Belarus to restore the powers of journalists

The American news agency Associated Press (AP) called on the authorities of Belarus to restore the powers of journalists of a number of foreign media. This was stated in a statement published on August 29 by AP Media Relations Director Lauren Easton. Follow the development of events in the broadcast: the Maidan is looming: Belarus is on strike and protesting - all the news Easton confirmed the deprivation of accreditation and the deportation of two AP journalists from Belarus to Russia. This was regarded by AP as an undisguised attack on press freedom in Belarus. According to Easton, the AP strongly condemned this fact of an attack on press freedom and called on the Belarusian authorities to restore the powers of journalists and give them the opportunity to cover events in this country. The decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus to cancel accreditation and subsequent deportation of journalists of a number of foreign media was also condemned by the European Federation of Journalists (EFZ). Earlier, the news agency reported the deprivation of accreditation and expulsion from Belarus of four Russian journalists working in the American agency Associated Press and the German television channel ARD. In total, by decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, about 20 journalists were deprived of their powers and deported from the country, including employees of Reuters, the Associated Press, the German newspaper Deutsche Welle, the French radio RFI, the British media group BBC.
