Canada will respond to the introduction of US duties on aluminum imports
The Government of Canada intends to take countermeasures in response to the introduction by the United States of duties in the amount of 10% on the import of Canadian aluminum, said Deputy Head of Government Christya Freeland in an official statement. The US announcement on August 6 on the introduction of tariffs on some Canadian aluminum products citing national security considerations is unreasonable and unacceptable, she said. According to Freeland, imports of Canadian aluminum into the United States do not undermine the national security of the United States. In connection with the actions of Washington, Ottawa intends to introduce retaliatory symmetrical duties on American imports. According to the news agency, earlier US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of customs duties in the amount of 10% on aluminum imports from Canada. He stressed that Canada used the United States to harm the American aluminum industry.
