UN stands up for Government of National Accord in Libya

The Government of National Accord and the Presidential Council are those structures that the UN recognizes as legitimate institutions of power in Libya, Stefan Dujarrick, the official representative of the Secretary General of the organization, told journalists on April 28. Commenting on the statement of the Commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar, who said that he takes over the functions of governing the country, the diplomat pointed to the unchanged position of the UN. He stressed that the PNA and the Libyan Presidential Council were the only internationally recognized form of government in Libya. Any political change must proceed democratically, not through military action. Dujarrick As previously reported by the news agency, Haftar announced the day before, April 27, that he did not recognize the more Schirat Agreement (on the establishment of the PNA and the Presidential Council) and that the leadership of the country would now be exercised by the command of the LNA. The Russian side expressed disapproval of this step. However, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, Moscow also does not approve of the head of the PNA, Faiz Sarraj, for his unwillingness to negotiate with Haftar.
